Uniform transport authority to end city’s traffic woes!

By Qamar ZJ

Following petitions from citizens, the Department of Land Transport (DULT) has put up the transport unification policy for public feedback. The next request by the residents is to have the BMLTA Bill tabled during the winter session of the Karnataka legislature.

Says Mitali from the Jhatkaa.org team that petitioned DULT: “The BMLTA Bill solves the issue of lack of coordination among multiple transport agencies and departments like the BMTC, BMRCL, KRIDE, BBMP and Transport Department among others, who cater to the transport and mobility needs of the city. Each of these agencies function independently, and there is a clear lack of alignment in terms of strategy, plan and execution causing several problems – delayed execution, missing precious integration opportunities and in some cases, worsening the traffic situation.

“The BMLTA Bill if passed will conceive an empowered and unified metropolitan transport authority (UMTA) that convenes, plans and coordinates projects of all transport and mobility service providers, based on long term mobility plan built on principles of sustainable mobility and with a scientific understanding of patterns of movement in order to reduce emissions and make daily commute reliable, safe and affordable for all citizens.

“We believe that active citizen pressure will encourage more MLAs to champion this Bill in the Winter Session and that’s why we need enough people to show their support.”

You can make a difference to get the BMLTA bill tabled by signing this petition now!
