Crime rate in IT corridor highest in Whitefield, followed by Koramangala & HSR Layout! 1

With the dawn of 2020, it is time to look at the crime rate last year. We analysed five police stations in the IT corridor, and found the highest incidence of crime recorded in Whitefield followed distantly by Koramangala and HSR Layout. Bellandur and Electronic City made up the tail end.

However, one has to note that the jurisdictions of the police stations, the proactiveness of the residents and the cops could also play a part in more number of First Information Reports being recorded by certain police stations. Still, these statistics are indicators of the crime scenes in different neighbourhoods. This will help the residents to stay more alert and vigilant to every suspicious person or event happening in their vicinity. As the cops cannot be everywhere, only a vigilant public can prevent crime.

Whitefield recorded 538 FIRs in 2019, which was way higher than the second neighbourhood that came a distant second: Koramangala with 415 complaints. Please also note that this number does not include the non-FIR police complaints on minor issues like mobile phone snatchings, civil disputes and so on.

HSR Layout recorded an almost equal number of crimes as Koramangala at 411, while Bellandur was not too far behind at 376 and Electronic City at 321 police complaints. Interestingly, Indiranagar which does not figure in the IT corridor scored the least at 290.

Bengaluru statistics
If we were to compare this with the number of FIRs in Bangalore city, it was 43121 as of November 2019 (the December figures are yet to be updated by the department on their website). Petty cases comprised 30,800 FIRs and these are usually cyber crimes and thefts. Among other statistics for Bangalore, 19542 people were arrested in connection with their cases, 11236 properties were seized, and 12137 people were chargesheeted. Under the the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 or COTPA, 2003, the cops fined various people and firms and recovered Rs 8.4 lakh as of November 2019, out of which 4876 were individuals caught smoking in public places.

So what are most of the petty crimes? We have noticed the major offences recorded in FIRs are thefts. In this sub section, most happen to be two-wheeler thefts. Therefore, keeping any vehicle outside your house or even inside your house compound without proper precautions can cost heavily to you.
